Llama
Fibre |
| Llama fibre is soft, warm, naturally thermal and strong. It is a double coated fleece with a fine down hair protected by a coarse outer guard hair. When we groom our llamas, we save every bit of hair that comes out and every 3 years or so, we shear them completely. |
|
|
The fibre is sorted into colours and picked over for bits of grass and hay and then washed. After it is thoroughly dry, we tease it out by hand and then put it through our drum carder which helps to organise the fibres as a preparation for spinning or felting. Shearing, sorting, scouring (washing) and carding takes more time per kilo than the rest of the processing. It takes approximately 6 hours to spin one kilo of fibre. |
|
Although llama fibre can make wonderful knitting yarn, we prefer making utility items that you can use every day, so spin thick yarn for weaving rugs. These unique rugs are woven on our own loom using a natural linen warp which is completely hidden by the 100% llama fibre weft, making the rug fully reversible. There are no dyes, only natural fibre in natural colours so cleaning is easy! |

|
Felt is made from animal fibre and is a
quick and easy method of making cloth without the need to spin or weave.
Add moisture and heat to the fibre and together with pressure from your
hands, the fibres tighten, contracting into a dense mat. Our bags and
luggage are 100 % llama fibre combined with English leather.
Here's one we did earlier- Blue Peter presenter Matt Baker tries his hand at felting! |
